Lalmatia was developed in the 60s with the goal of being a peaceful new neighborhood located right beside Dhanmondi. It was divided into 8 blocks, which still remains till today, and planned out in a very organized way. Although a rare sight nowadays, there are still a few houses from the 1960s with large, open balconies. But you will also find several real estate developers announcing the arrival of their new projects. This shows that the area is still in touch with its roots but is seeing a new wave of development.
The Lalmatia Housing Society is the most prominent residential part of the area. Other than that, which encompasses most of Lalmatia, there’s also the Soptonir Government Officers Apartments. Apartments for rent in Lalmatia are a lot more affordable when compared to neighboring Dhanmondi. And most flats for sale range from 2 bedroom apartments to 4 bedroom apartments. Those looking for apartments for sale in Lalmatia will find many options ranging from 600 square feet to 2000 square feet. Other than that, you will also find a few residential-commercial properties that are preferred by small businesses and startups.

All these stops are located within close proximity from Lalmatia. Another great thing that greatly increases the accessibility of Lalmatia is its close proximity to Dhanmondi, which is an area famous for its recreational facilities as well as commercial activity. Unlike most neighborhoods in Dhaka, Lalmatia has a lot of green spaces. This includes numerous playgrounds, such as Zakir Hossain Road Playground, Lalmatia Block-D Playground, and Mohammadpur Park located on the border of Lalmatia and Mohammadpur. You will hear the joyous sounds of the kids hollering around and playing their favorite sports in these playgrounds. There are also numerous cultural centers in Lalmatia, where you can spend an enjoyable evening. One’s Dwip Gallery, where a lot of exhibitions are held. Another one is Upside Down Gallery BD, an illusion art gallery where everything is literally upside down. It is a surreal experience that visitors will never forget.

The area has numerous mosques, including Lalmatia Jame Masjid, Minar Masjid, Baitul Haram Jame Masjid, Dhaka Wasa Jame Masjid, and many others. Nearby areas also have many mosques, including Takwah Masjid in Dhanmondi.
Nearby Areas
Lalmatia falls under the jurisdiction of Dhaka North City Corporation. Dhanmondi, which is one of Dhaka’s most upscale neighborhoods as well as a major commercial hub, is located right next to Lalmatia. The vibrant and colorful neighborhood of Mohammadpur is also located nearby. If you go further north via Mirpur Road, then you’ll come across Adabor and Shyamoli. And the Dhanmondi 27 Road leads to Dhanmondi. In the east, there’s Farmgate and the National Parliament Building. And to the west, there’s Sankar and Dhanmondi.

Food & Restaurant
You’ll find restaurants serving a diverse range of cuisines in Lalmatia. For local food, there’s Kutumbari, Shad Tehari Ghar, Amjad Hotel and Restaurant, and many more small eateries. For international cuisines, there’s TBC for Pizza, Pasta, Seafood, and Sushi, as well as many other restaurants, such as Bhooter Bari and Seventh Heaven. The most favorite hangout spot for the youth of the area is Crimson Cup, a cafe serving breakfast, coffee, and desserts. Lalmatia is known primarily for being a residential haven and shopping destinations are few and far between. There’s a shopping center called SA World which recently opened. The most popular shopping destination in the area is the Lalmatia branch of Aarong, which is one of Bangladesh’s best lifestyle brands. However, in neighboring Dhanmondi 27, there are numerous large shopping malls, containing many different brand outlets for some of Bangladesh’s biggest brands. Examples include Rapa Plaza, Genetic Plaza, Astorion, Arannya, etc. Lalmatia also has numerous general stores selling all sorts of necessities and groceries. There are also supershops such as Meena Bazaar and Agora for most daily shopping needs. For grocery shopping, there’s also the Mohammadpur Town Hall Bazar, which is located very close to Lalmatia.
