Our world is filled with numerous wonders. Some of them are man-made, and some are natural wonders. As we are living in the technological age now, most of the earth’s weird phenomena can be explained by science. But there are more than a few sights in this world that still make you scratch your head and make you wonder how it ever happened. This is why today, we will be looking at five extremely strange wonders of the world, and delve deeper into how they came to be.

Dead Sea

A view of the Dead Sea from Jordan

This might look extremely ordinary, but the Dead Sea is anything but. Located in the Jordan Rift Valley bordering Jordan and Israel, this lake is famous for being one of the saltiest bodies of water on earth. The lake is more than 9 times saltier than ocean water, and the high density of salt in the lake makes you float in it. This weird phenomenon resulted in the lake being thought of as having healing powers in ancient times. It is still frequented by many tourists, with numerous resorts springing up on both sides of the lake. The salty water of the lake is also said to be amazing for the skin. All in all, the Dead Sea is one of the weirder natural wonders, and surely deserves its place on today’s list of Strange Wonders Of The World.

Giant’s Causeway

The basalt rock formations of Giant’s Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway is a UNESCO world heritage site located in County Antrim, on the northern shores of Northern Ireland. The area consists of around 40,000 basalt rock columns interlocked together, and it is a sight to behold. These rocks formed from an ancient volcanic eruption and they’re notable for being mostly hexagonal. It started attracting tourists from the 19th Century but became over-commercialized. The National Trust of the UK took over the site and removed all the stores and attractions. It focused more on retaining the natural beauty and heritage of the site, which has been voted as one of the United Kingdom’s most popular natural wonders. It is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Northern Ireland, and its unique appearance and beauty surely make it one of the most strange wonders of the world.

Pamukkale

Located in Turkey, Pamukkale is a city famous for its thermal springs and white limestone and calcium coated cliffs. The name Pamukkale is Turkish for ‘Cotton Castle’, which is a reference to the white cliffs of the city. From ancient times, Pamukkale has been a famous tourist attraction for its hot springs and unique appearance. Unknown to most tourists of the city, it has numerous well-preserved ancient Roman ruins, as it used to be the site of the holy city of Hierapolis. The ancient city is now designated as a UNESCO world heritage site. Overall, Pamukkale and its calcium cliffs have a strange appeal that makes it one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the world.

Socotra Island

Compared to Socotra Island, the past few sites and natural wonders that I’ve mentioned in today’s article may seem tame. Socotra Island is a territory of Yemen, located in the middle of the Arabian sea and Guardafui Channel. It might seem like a small, nondescript island with a population of around 44,000 people but what makes the island unique from almost any other place on earth is its endemic plant population. This means that the plants and trees that grow on the island are exclusive to this island only, and cannot be found anywhere else on earth. The most famous of the plants is the Dragon’s Blood Tree, which gives the whole island an alien-looking appearance. In the end, you will be hard-pressed to find sights more strange than the endemic flora and fauna of Socotra Island.

Zhangye Danxia Landform

The Zhangye Danxia Landform is a series of unusually colored and layered rock formations located in the Zhangye National Geopark in Gansu, China. These rocks resulted from sandstone and other minerals being deposited over 24 million years.  Consequently, this gives these rocks the appearance of a layered colored cake. Plus the shifting of tectonic plates, and wear and tear by wind, rain, and time have resulted in extremely beautiful landforms and structures. This is considered to be one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world. Its unique appearance and status as one of the most beautiful in the list of strange wonders of the world make it a popular tourist destination.

To sum up, today’s list of strange wonders of the world featured some of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world, as well as some of the weirdest places. But we can all agree on the fact that these places are unusual and have a mystical charm to them, attracting a lot of tourists.
