Decorating any area of your house can be challenging if you want to do it right. Depending on the atmosphere you want to create inside your house, your furniture arrangement, color schemes, lighting, etc. will be different. If you want to make your space a functional one, you must use every element of your space efficiently and have a place for everything. But if you want to create a cozy atmosphere, you have to choose your furniture, lighting, and color carefully. However, the challenge gets even trickier when it comes to decorating a large living room. Bigger rooms can be wonderful for entertainment, but may not as cozy or even functional for day-to-day living.

So how can you make the best of a large living room? There are plenty of ways you can try to make the room the way you want. Regardless of the shape of your room, the following tips will help you with ideas of how to make the best of a huge living area both functionally and cozily.

Designating zones

Designating different zones for different purposes makes the space more tidy

Smaller rooms have less area to work with and there is a few things that you can do with it. You will most likely have room for one sitting or conversation area and no additional space for furniture groupings. But it is a completely different scenario when decorating a large living room. In a large living area, it can function much more diversely compared to a small living room. Other than furniture placement, you might have to get creative with how to best utilize the size or shape of the room you have. Otherwise, it may lose its functionality and can make the room cluttery.

This is why you should designate zones for keeping the functional aspect of the area intact. For example, while decorating a large living room, your conversation zone should completely be separated from your media zone. Likewise, there might be an area for a writing desk, a console or a game table, a dining area or perhaps a reading area.

Or you can even try to divide the space visually. This will keep the functionality of your living room intact while giving you plenty of options to make it cozy and fun. You can put up a half-wall or create a semi-permanent home partition to separate one area from another. Even a sofa with its back to another space, or a large bench, an attractive screen, large lamps, curtains, or plants can help divide the spaces.

Anchoring the room

Anchoring the room will give each designated space its purpose

The main purpose of anchoring a room is to establish a visual distinction. The concept is also used as a design methodology. If there are too many objects in a large room, it can lose cohesion and make the space look cluttered. But if you anchor the area with some really distinctive anchor pieces, that same space can be transformed into a focal point of the room. For instance, a large sofa or a large coffee table and even built-in bookcases or a piano can help anchor a room. Smaller pieces, on the other hand, can be tucked in here and there as accents pieces.

Size matters

In a tall room use taller furniture

The size of the objects in your living room including the furniture also matters. The size ratio between the living room and the objects inside the room makes all the difference. If your living room is tall and has high ceilings, things may seem out of balance with regular-sized furniture and other design elements. To make the room look proportional to its surroundings, opt for taller furniture whenever possible. That way it won’t make things look out of place and give your room a balanced look and feel. Consider opting for a taller cupboard, curtains, bookshelves, taller backs on chairs, and so on.

Lighting

Light has the most impact in any room and it has the ability to change the look and feel of a space

Lighting is the most important element of any room in your house. Use it effectively and you can completely change the look and feel of your room. So while decorating a large living room, the impact of lighting must be taken into consideration. Usually, large rooms have multiple windows, so during the day lighting isn’t as much of a concern. But if the room doesn’t have sufficient windows or have dark corners, you have to think about an alternative solution. Other than using only a central light, opt for ambient lights set them up across the room. It would illuminate everything better.

Also, you can use accent light to give some parts of the area a unique look. If there is a reading table or a couch near the bookshelf, place a task light beside it. This way it won’t overexpose anything and keep everything properly lit. We have an excellent article on clever home lighting hacks. You can check that out if you get into details.

Color

Smart use of color creates proper balance

While tall furniture and accessories are great for drawing the eye up and accentuating high ceilings, sometimes the opposite effect is what we crave. Color can be used to break down the height of the wall or cut the size of a tall wall to a more comfortable height. If you have a high ceiling, you may want to try painting the ceiling a shade or two or even several shades darker than your walls. That way your ceiling won’t seem as tall and your room might feel cozier. Also, colors can be used to liven up your home.

It’s normal to long for a larger living area when you are living in a compact one, but decorating a large living room has its own challenges. Whether you have a living room with extremely high ceilings or simply have a lot of space to fill, these tips will help you decorate your large living room properly.
