What makes Mohakhali one of the most special areas in Dhaka, in terms of housing important establishments, is the sheer concentration of tertiary-level healthcare institutions and research centers. Unlike most areas in Dhaka, this neighborhood maintains the perfect balance between residential and non-residential setups. While the Mohakhali DOHS can facilitate you with the best-in-class residential settings, the central zone of the area can be considered as the hive of commercial and service-oriented activity. Today, however, we will focus on the service-oriented aspects of the area and discuss some of the most notable tertiary-level hospitals in Mohakhali. This hospital was established in 1955 as TB Hospital, but in 1962, it was renamed and upgraded to the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital or NIDCH. Not only is it one of the most visited chest hospitals in Mohakhali, but also in Bangladesh. It is also known as TB hospital.

It is the city’s main hospital for respiratory diseases. It is also a research center for chest diseases fully supported by the government. There are seven departments in the institute including Respiratory Medicine, Thoracic Surgery, Radiology & Imaging, Pathology & Microbiology, Biochemistry, Transfusion Medicine, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. It offers postgraduate courses and training facilities namely Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest diseases (DTCD), MD (Chest), MS (Thoracic Surgery), FCPS (Pulmonary), FCPS (Thoracic Surgery).

The hospital offers indoor, outdoor, emergency, and diagnostic facilities. The hospital has accommodation for 685 patients. Of them, 170 beds are allotted for Non-Tubercular Chest diseases, 330 for Pulmonary Tuberculosis cases, 85 for Asthma patients in the National Asthma Center building, 70 beds are reserved for MDR TB Patients and 100 beds are paying beds.

People from across the country come here for better health care facilities, especially those suffering from complicated chest diseases including TB. Because NIDCH is the only institute in Bangladesh to have modern medical and surgical equipment specialized to treat respiratory issues.

National Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital (NICRH)

The National Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital or NICRH started its run in 1982 in Dhaka Medical College. In 1986, however, the institute was shifted to Mohakhali and went through a series of development activities since then. In April 2015, with the help of the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), NICRH was upgraded to a 300-bed hospital. It is one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in Mohakhali.

With a fleet of highly qualified faculty members, this is currently the most advanced cancer research center in the country. There are 24 departments in the institute including Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Gynecological Oncology, Paediatric Haematology & Oncology, and so on. 

Also, the hospital is conducting cancer research regularly and is equipped with all sorts of modern medical facilities to facilitate every cancer-related treatment. These are the main reasons why people across the country rely heavily on this hospital for their cancer treatments.

National Center for Hearing and Speech for Children (NCHSC)

This healthcare institute is one of the projects of SAHIC. It was established and inaugurated in 1992. It has all the modern medical facilities for early detection of hearing loss, hearing aid fittings with earmolds preparation, and treatments of all types of ENT diseases in the outpatient department at a nominal registration fee of BDT 100 per patient (effective for 30 days). The charges are also affordable for hearing tests and hearing aid fitting. Financially poor patients are examined and tested free of charge. But those who can afford can consult a doctor within 30 for BDT 200 registration fee (Fast Track) and within 15 minutes for 400 (Executive Fast Track).

But for those who require hospitalized surgical treatment, a 28-bed Specialized ENT Hospital (SENTH) was established in 1999 on the first floor of the Center Building (20 General beds and 8 Cabins) with the most modern operating equipment. It has every facility to carry out all types of ear, nose, throat, head, and neck surgeries with microsurgery including Cochlear Implant.

Infectious Diseases Hospital, Dhaka

Also known as “7-tola building”

This hospital was established in 1956. Over the years the hospital has gone through many developments and come to be known as the “seven storeyed hospitals” or the “dog bite clinic”. It offers treatments for an array of infectious diseases ranging from diphtheria, tetanus, measles, AIDS, rabies, typhoid fever, chickenpox, viral hepatitis, jaundice, mumps, measles, and so on. 

This tertiary level hospital has 100 beds; 40 paying beds, 60 free beds. There is an outdoor emergency department to tackle emergency cases every day (even on holidays). For vaccine shots, you need to buy a ticket for only BDT 10. The admission fee is BDT 15. After admission, you have to pay roughly BDT 300 for the bed.

icddr,b’s TB treating center

There are some generalized healthcare institutes in Mohakhali as well, treating patients from all sorts of diseases. Universal Medical College & Hospital, Aysha Memorial Hospital & Diagnostic Centre, Metropolitan Medical Center are a few notable ones. There are other government-funded tertiary level hospitals as well. Sheikh Russel Gastroliver Institute & Hospital, and Kustho Niyontron Institute & Hospital are two such hospitals in Mohakhali but the former hasn’t been fully operational yet.

On the other hand, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) is also amongst the notable healthcare institutes in Mohakhali. It is an international health research organization responsible mostly for conducting research on various types of infectious diseases. They also offer treatments through their Dhaka Hospital.

A makeshift hospital named DNCC Covid-19 hospital was also established this year. It will have 1,100 beds when fully constructed and features a new pathology and radiology unit. Initially, the hospital started with a limited capacity with 250 beds. Of which, 150 beds will be for general purposes with oxygen supply, 5o will be for ICU, and 50 will be for catering emergency needs. However, after the pandemic, this hospital will be turned into a general hospital. Currently, it is the largest Covid-19 treatment hospital in Bangladesh.

All these hospitals played a crucial role in tackling the covid situation in Bangladesh and are still doing so. After Agargaon and Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, Mohakhali houses the most tertiary-level hospitals in the capital. And their contribution to the field of medical research is what made them important and special.
