Located in Ruma Upazila in the hilly district of Bandarban, Boga lake is one of the most popular lakes of Bangladesh. It may very well be the most sought-after destination for tourists. There are a couple of interesting factors behind its adulation. Number one, not only do you have to track through the dense hilly forest of Bandarban, you also have to make an impressive climb of 1,246 feet to get there. But that is not even the coolest thing about this picture-perfect puddle of water. That credit goes to the legendary backstory of this lake and how it came into being.

It is believed that, many many years ago, some people from Khumi village happened to kill a deity and later made a meal out of her flesh. In response, the deity came back as a dragon but instantly after her appearance an earthquake occurred, and the entirety of the village disappeared into the earth and formed a lake!

No matter how skeptical you may feel about the lake’s origin story, there is no doubt about its astonishing beauty. Boga lake is a wildlife sanctuary and houses a diverse range of plants and animals including some of the most endangered species. There are a lot of recreational activities that you take part in. Talking about the lakes of Bangladesh, Kaptai is the largest of them all. This man-made lake was created damming the Karnafuli River. The environmental impact of the lake is too great. Although created primarily for hydroelectric power generation, the lake contributes to freshwater fish production, flood control, irrigation, and much more. However, the lake has become an important resource for some other considerations. It has made accessing different parts of the lake easy by creating diversified and long waterways. Many places that used to take a day or even more to reach have now become an hour’s trip by speedboat or launch.

That being said, the Kaptai lake is one of Bangladesh’s great holiday destinations—an outdoor adventure paradise backed by an unblemished nature that’s beautiful in every season. During the summer, visitors flock to its turquoise waters for kayaking or trek picturesque trails for glorious views of the basin. When winter hits, all the resorts kick into high gear to accommodate the extra pressure. Be sure to check out the country’s largest lake if you want to have a glimpse into the pristine nature.
