The University of Rajshahi is the second-oldest and the second-largest one in the matter of academics in Bangladesh. The Rajshahi University or RU is referred to as the Cambridge of the East for its’ role in academics and propensity for outdoor sports. The Rajshahi University Campus is known for being one of the top universities of Bangladesh with proper research facilities as well. Situated in the northern part of the Rajshahi District, it provides a delightful amalgamation of nature and culture. The vintage absolutism of the Rajshahi University Campus becomes apparent through the mural, sculpture, monuments, lakes, sanctuaries, and infrastructural design.  

The Shaheed Minar

The main campus of the University is only a mile away from the alluring Padma river. Established on the east side of the main Administration building, Shaheed Minar portrays the finest architectural design. Murtaza Bashir, an abstract realist painter designed a mural presented along with the Shaheed Minar. Sheikh Muzibur Rahman, the father of the nation, founded this memorial. It is one of the most meaningful landmarks of the Rajshahi University Campus. There is an open stage referred to as “Muktomancho” just beside the Shaheed Minar to carry out cultural activities.

The scenic beauty of Paris Road

Paris Road bears the title of being one of the significant remarks of the Rajshahi University Campus. The road carries the name of the capital of France for its almost uncanny resemblance between the roads. It interconnects the east side of the campus with the rest. The presence of iconic trees on both the roadsides and the clean air of the environment can provide inner peace. Sun rays pouring through the Albizia Richardiana, or locally referred to as Gagan Shirish creates a heavenly aesthetic scene. However, having a lifespan of 50-60 years, these trees are on the verge of their lifespan.  

The multifarious diversity of artwork

The structure of the murals, sculptures, and monuments has a meaningful and vast range of varieties. Three murals hold significant value for the Rajshahi University Campus. One on the background wall of the Shaheed Minar, one near the Golden Jubilee Tower, one on the background wall of the “Muktomancho”. Murtaza Bashir, the prominent painter of Bangladesh painted the mural near the Shaheed Minar. The mural of the Golden Jubilee Tower represents the struggle of both men and women. There is an obelisk of professor Dr. Shamsuzzoha exhibited along with his famous quote. 

The monument in front of the senate-house is named ” Shabash Bangladesh”. Nitun Kundu, the distinguished sculptor of Bangladesh designed and constructed this monument. It is one of the largest and most significant war memorial sculptures in Bangladesh.

The natural habitat

There is a central park in the Rajshahi University Campus near its Shaheed Minar complex. The students and residents of the university can admire this small park and use it for recreational activities. There is a botanical garden as well making a comfortable habitat for very rare species of trees and plants. There are two big lakes, one of them known as the Shorobor, and the other is part of the Jungle Genome Project. This ecological project provides a safe sanctuary for birds.
