The skies of Dhaka were once bare, with a never-ending horizon visible from atop the rooftops of the cozy duplex residential homes that were a hallmark of the city. But in the past few decades, the city has seen a boom in construction and real estate projects, which has resulted in the creation of numerous massive buildings that dwarfed anything that the city of Dhaka had seen before. This resulted in a massive change in the Dhaka skyline, which is now crowded by over 1500 high rise buildings, with many more under construction. Today, we will be taking a look at some of the tallest buildings in Dhaka, including the iconic Bangladesh Bank building in Motijheel, and The Westin Dhaka in Gulshan. Note that these buildings might not necessarily be listed here by rank, but rather by the virtue of being the tallest in their category.

Tallest Building In Dhaka (City Centre Dhaka)

The City Centre Dhaka is located in Motijheel, which is Dhaka’s oldest financial district, as well as a major administrative hub. Rising up to a height of 171 m (561 ft), it is the tallest building in Dhaka. The building has 37 floors, 10 of which are dedicated to parking, and features mostly office spaces, along with a convention center, recreation center, as well as a large spacious atrium with greenery. Another notable feature of the building is its helipad, which is used for the filming of numerous advertisements because of the view of the Dhaka skyline from the building, as well as its height and stature. The City Centre was topped out in 2012, which is when it took the crown of the tallest building in Dhaka from the Bangladesh Bank Building, which we will be looking at later in the article.

Hilton Hotels is one of the largest hotel chains in the entire world, with over 500 properties in 94 different countries. With Dhaka’s status as a global megacity, numerous top hotel chains have come to Dhaka to establish their presence, and Hilton is no exception. The Hilton Dhaka is located at Gulshan Avenue, right beside the Gulshan 2 DCC Market. Although the building is still under construction, the building has already been topped out at 152 m (499 ft) and will have 37 stories, making it the second tallest building in Dhaka city. Hilton Dhaka will feature 255 rooms and a plethora of luxuries that are expected of a hotel that is slated to be one of the most luxurious hotels in Dhaka.

We’ve talked about two of Dhaka’s tallest buildings in the last two subheadings, but now we will be moving to the building that started this revolution of super-tall buildings in Dhaka – The Bangladesh Bank Building. Constructed in 1985, the building was the tallest building in Dhaka when its construction was completed. With a height of 137.1 m (450 ft) and being 31 stories tall, the building is still the third tallest building in Dhaka. Housed within the building is the premises of Bangladesh Bank, the country’s central bank. Having held the title of the tallest building in Dhaka for 27 years, it is also one of the most iconic buildings in Dhaka city.

Hilton Dhaka is slated to be the tallest hotel building in Dhaka, but with operations yet to commence, the title is currently held by The Westin Dhaka. Located in Gulshan 2, near the Gulshan 2 circle, the building is the 5th tallest building in Dhaka, standing at 120 m (394 ft) with 30 floors. The Westin Dhaka has long been considered to be one of the most luxurious hotels in Dhaka and is a venue for lavish ceremonies, including weddings, birthday parties, and conferences.

Tallest Educational Institute (BRAC University)

When you think of the tallest buildings in Dhaka, an educational institution wouldn’t be the first thing that comes to mind. Normally you would imagine a sprawling campus spread out over a large area. But the reality of life in a metropolis sometimes makes it difficult for universities to create such campuses inside the vicinity of the city. Even top institutions like BRAC University are no exception to this problem. To circumvent that, BRAC University started its journey inside a super tall building located in Mohakhali, creating greater space for the institution. With a height of 110 m (361 ft), the 22 storied building is one of the tallest buildings in Dhaka, as well as the tallest educational institution in the country. But this will not be the case for long, as they are moving into a new campus in Badda very soon, having outgrown the building.

Tallest Residential Building (Judges Complex)

Although once very rare, high rise residential buildings are a common sight throughout the city but are mostly capped to around 20 floors. But the Judges Complex broke that barrier, ending up being the tallest residential building, as well as one of the tallest buildings in Dhaka. Located in Kakrail, and spanning a height of 101 m (331 ft), the building houses judges from the Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the country. Although surrounding areas have numerous tall residential buildings, none come close to the sheer size and grandeur of the Supreme Court Judge’s Residential Complex.

In today’s article on the tallest buildings in Dhaka, we’ve looked at massive buildings like the City Centre, iconic buildings like the Bangladesh Bank Building, and luxury hotels like The Westin Dhaka. As time passes, the buildings that dominate Dhaka’s skyline will get taller and taller. And someday, they might even compete with the megatall skyscrapers in the Middle East and China.
