When you think of home, you think of comfort and security. You think about leaning back and relaxing. But it doesn’t become that way on its own. There are many factors that need to be considered and addressed before a home truly becomes a place where one can be carefree. So how does one get to that point? Today we look at how we can get about creating a safe home.

Fires & Burns

Fires can quite easily get out of hand

The primary concern of all households: fire. Though we’re not exactly believers of ‘spontaneous combustion’, we do understand it takes very little to set off a fire; so precaution is key to preventing it. When creating a safe the kitchen is generally the first place to secure to prevent accidents at home. Check all stove connections to ensure no leaks are present. When using the stove, make sure the place is user-friendly with chances of accidental burns and emblazoning fires.

Bangladesh also suffers a lot of power outages and though almost everyone has some form of electrical backup, many still use candles. All we can say is; be careful when doing so. We all know the dangers of a portable fire. Candle encasement can be found in various lighting stores. We would definitely recommend a small investment in acquiring a few of those for the house when creating a safe home. If you really want to be safe, though, you could get fire alarms for the house and even an easily accessible fire extinguisher. These may seem a little too much for you, but we would never say no to creating a safe home.

Poisoning

Medicine can be dangerous if not managed

We don’t really think about poisoning as an active threat in our regular lives, but poisoning isn’t necessarily an out of the question threat. Poisoning should be looked at as anything ingested that makes you feel terrible. Make the house free of such a hazard to prevent accidents at home. Items like medicine are sometimes unavoidable in the house, but keep them labeled well to avoid mix-ups or the wrong people having them. Cleaning equipment and solutions should be kept and handled safely to avoid mistaken consumption. Even make-up and its many components can be poisonous as is usually denoted on the items themselves. Carefully sorting, labeling and storing these items can really prevent the most unexpected of accidents.

Trips & Falls

Comic, but falls can be quite dangerous

We fall because we are clumsy and it is often a reason to laugh. But falls can be quite dangerous; especially in a house with many objects and corners. In a serious light, falling can cause severe injuries and we should secure the house from tripping concerns. Wet floors should be quickly cleaned up or informed of to everyone in the house. When using soapy cleaners, make sure to take the right precaution and clean it up as soon as possible. Your children’s lovable toys can also be a disastrous tripping hazard, so teach them to clean up after themselves. And for the washroom, having handrails can be quite useful for unsteady or elderly people, though everyone is free to use them.

Cuts and bruises

Sharp objects should be handled with care

It really is starting to sound like the house is a place of dire severity and dangers. But only if you let it be! Another factor to be wary of when creating a safe home is things that can cut and bruise. These are things like scissors, knives, anti-cutters, hammers, mallets and a medley of other things. That sounds like a lot of things and it truly is. But the purpose is to inform you to be safe. Store these items carefully and use them responsibly. Don’t leave them out on the edge of desks where the can fall and hurt someone or someone might rest their hands on them. The biggest lesson here is to be vigilant of their whereabouts or prevent the situation altogether by storing them safely.

ELECTRICAL concerns

A short circuit can be painful

Nearly everything in the house nowadays runs off of electricity. Your phone, your TV, your computer, your iron… some people even prefer to use electric stoves now! And with kitchen designs in 2018 calling for smart kitchens, the number of electronics increases even more. So what can we do in this day and age? Well obviously, these items were made to help us and they have plenty of safety features built in. So why be concerned at all?

How you handle them determines how well they serve you. Unplug products not used for a long time. This will both increase their longevity while saving you a little money on utility bills. Use extension cords smartly and don’t connect many in serial. Keep all damp or wet objects away from electrical components unless that is their purpose! Creating a safe home means luxury with peace of mind.

Children hazards

Kids deserve security

Children are our future! And they must be kept safe. Many of the issues addressed above will definitely help in this case, but children add new levels of difficulty in managing a house. Medication looks like candy to them and is a constant poison or choking hazard. Labeling won’t really help in the case of children, so keep medicine out of their reach altogether to prevent accidents at home. When it’s playtime, make sure their toys don’t have small parts that can pose a choking threat. And when the kids are playing in another room or at a short distance, having baby monitors can be great to keep track of their activities.

But it really is expecting too much to think you can keep eyes on children at all times. So when you cannot directly monitor them, it is good to keep the environment safe. Put away sharp objects like kitchen knives and scissors to prevent accidents at home. Staples and clips belong safely in a drawer unreachable by the children. When creating a safe home, remember that houses with children require a bit more attention to detail. We have an entire guide for first time parents, if you would like a more in-depth list of things to look out for.

Pet hazard

Our pets need love and security

And when talking about attention to detail, pets require an extra amount of attention as well. Creating a safe home also means a creating pet-friendly home. So how do we do this for our little friends? The key aspects to look into are dangerous entry and exit points for them. We wouldn’t want them walking on the ledges of the building on the 6th floor. Another important note to keep them safe is removing anything they may eat that leads to allergies or poisoning. These are things like medicine and cleaning items. If you are a pet owner, you probably already store things safely from their reach, but do remember to be thorough about it for both your and their safety.

We understand that the house may seem like a center for hazard after reading this, but we’re just pointing out how to prevent accidents at home that can occur. There’s no need to give up your luxuries and live the hermit life! Creating a safe home well should keep you safe and help you relax. So do that and let us
