Reading Time: 3 minutes

Days go by but the memories remain. And one of the best ways to preserve these memories is through photographs. So many of our memories are associated with pictures. From taking pictures to developing the film, the entire process used to be sentimental to us back then. If you are a 90s kid, you know exactly what I am talking about. A camera and a reel full of films were all you would need to capture memories. At that time, there was no smartphone or digital camera as we have today. Everyone could take a limited number of pictures and it was really really exciting. So, how can we just let such precious memories be destroyed? In order to preserve them in good condition, you have to first know how to take care of old photos.

When it comes to pictures, everyone seems to preserve them in more or less the same way. Either we put those in old photo albums or photo booklets. In order to take care of old photos, you need to know how to store them properly. First things first, fetch whatever you have.

  • Some photos may become blurry, distorted or fuzzy due to many reasons such as humidity, exposure to light, and so on. In those cases, the best way to store these photos is through digital technology. First, you need to scan the pictures. Then you need to install some photo editing tools on your computer to color correct the photos.
  • Make a backup of all your photos. It is not possible to bring all the pictures back to life, in this case, you can keep them alive with some digital tools or editing apps.
  • Now clean up the scanner and the photos. If it is not cleaned properly, the dust can create problems during scanning and show up in the digital copy.
  • Albums made of plain plastic, glue and cardboard should be avoided. Because they are more likely to damage the photographs. You can use an “acid-free” album, to help preserve the photographs better.
  • If you want to frame an old photo, make sure to use an “acid-free” mat so that the photo doesn’t come in direct contact with the glass. Even better if you can use an “acid-free” backboard.

Don’t put two photos face to face
  • Always try to use an album for old photos. You can also use a box for storage if you want.
  • Be careful though, never keep two photos face to face otherwise, they can get stuck to other pictures and you can lose multiple pictures at once. So keep the picture back to front so that one does not stick to the other.
  • You can use small boxes to take care of the films. Just make sure not to expose them in sunlight.
  • Always try to keep pictures in a paper box so that they remain safe for many years. Also, make sure to seal the box properly so that water doesn’t get inside.
  • You can hang picture frames on walls. But don’t forget to bask them in the sun from time to time. Because moisture can get inside the glass frame.
  • Do not keep pictures in one place for a long period of time. Change places and keep them in a room where there is enough light and air otherwise, pictures can catch fungus.

Do these tasks routinely, let the pictures or album dry in the sun. That way you will be able to spend some quality time with your old memories on the rooftop of your building. Hanging old photos from your past around the house can make the interior look really great. It also helps bring out a reflection of your personality.
