Unless you own a custom-built home, chances are, you ended up with a small bathroom. At the rate we are constructing buildings, space is becoming less and less available and we are having to make do with smaller houses. Small spaces can either be peaceful and clean or just compact and depressing. Hence, for all the small space-dwellers, here are a few tips to make small bathrooms look bigger.

Avoid using patterned wallpaper

So, you have always dreamt of a fancy washroom. Exquisitely patterned wallpaper obviously gives off an aura of luxe. However, unless you have a large bathroom, all those patterns are going to look compact and untidy. Instead of going overboard with the wall, try to use the same bathroom tiles along with the wall. If the floor and the sides are of the same color, the seamless finishings will give the illusion of a bigger bathroom.

Build a shelf into the wall

We keep bringing contemporary shelves but for good reasons! Shelves are the easiest way of storing things and space-saving becomes easier when you can build one into the wall. It’s best if you can incorporate an inset cabinet. However, if you don’t have that option, go for a hanging shelf. You can attach it to the door to maximize space AND increase the functionality of your bathroom, all at the same time. These shelves are perfect for keeping counter-top bathroom necessities. Avoid clutter like a pro by getting rid of visual distractions!

Make a statement with the mirror

Mirrors are a go-to accessory  and this is one of the easiest ways to make your bathroom look bigger. If you want to invest in something, invest in a fancy mirror. Mirrors in general are an important factor that can change the overall feel of a space. A large mirror can visually make your bathroom appear twice its size!

Opt for a glass panel instead of a shower curtain

This is the one of the best tips to make small bathrooms look bigger. A shower curtain is likely to divide up a space and we don’t need any more of that. Opt for a glass panel instead (and it’s best if you could ditch the heavy frame around it, too!). A glass panel will break up a space without making it seem too obvious but does the work even better. The less space you keep for the shower, the better. Besides, modern bathrooms look the nicest with glass doors anyway.

Go for a soft color

Generally, we tend to relate lighter colors with openness and relaxation. An ideal bathroom should have a mixed vibe of relaxation with a lap of luxury. Stick to neutral colors like cool shades of pastel or whites for a background. Besides, too many colors in an area can break up the space and make it feel choppy. However, keeping the floors and the walls the same while painting the ceiling can create an illusion of a higher ceiling.

Set up an adequate lighting system

This is easily one of the best tips to make small bathrooms look bigger. It goes without saying that a bathroom is a multi-functional space. The importance of proper lights in a bathroom cannot be overstated. Your washroom needs to be adequately lit because it will be used for shaving and applying makeup, too. Other than that, attaching wall sconces with intricately designed fixtures can instantly add depth to a room which is why it’s one of the most useful tips to make small bathrooms look bigger.

A bathroom is a comfort station. Making big changes during a renovation can be costly but if it is strategically designed, it will be years before you have to even think about doing a bathroom renovation. Just because you have a small bathroom does not mean it has to look dull. Even if you don’t have a lot of space to work it, you can make it look stylishly eccentric. With these tips, upgrade your small bathroom today!
