Those who enjoy shopping, like to explore the various alleys of the city and find the market of their choice. A place where they feel comfortable shopping. And in continuation of our series written about different markets of Dhaka city, we continue exploring different markets of Dhanmondi today. 

There are great benefits of living in Dhanmondi. Shopping is one of them. From buying branded items to budget shopping, you can find everything there. Even those who live far from the area often come to Dhanmondi with a complete shopping list. Especially the markets in this area are at the top of the list for shopping during any major festival. 

Shimanto Square

Located on the road 2. of Dhanmondi, Shimanto Square Market is right next to Bangladesh Rifles Headquarter gate No. 4. It is one of the elite shopping centers of Dhanmondi area. Built across a huge space, this market is a modern shopping center with six floors. Markets of Dhanmondi are popular for their variety of products. This market houses several local brand stores including Smartex, Cat’s Eye, Richman, Apex. There are also several  jewelry shops, gift shops, electronics and servicing centers, and local boutiques. 

And inside this market you will find Agora Super Shop, which is one of the places where residents in the area buy all the daily necessities and raw materials. The food court in this market is very popular. That’s why, many people hang out at the food court of this market with family or friends on holidays. There are ATM booths inside the market as added convenience. There is also a convention hall for indoor games and different occasions. The market used to be closed on Tuesdays, and stayed open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. before the pandemic. In addition, this market has its own parking system

Priyangan Shopping Center 

This huge market can be seen on your left on your way to Dhaka College from the Science Laboratory. This is one of the old markets of Dhanmondi. As it’s close to Dhanmondi and has many things that are also available in Gausia and New Market, many people can shop here conveniently. There are many punjabi shops on the ground floor of this 4 storey market. To buy punjabis of different designs within the budget, it becomes crowded during different festivals. 

Also this market is best for those who want to design their own dresses. Because here you can find Than cloth shops all over the market. Besides, there are lace and embroidery and tailor shops as well. Although the price varies from time to time, compared to New Market or Gausia, many prefer to shop at this market because of less crowd and tailoring services . However, there are also good collections of three-pieces and sarees in this market. But you have to be an expert at bargaining if you want to shop from this market without getting duped.

Metro Shopping Mall

Located on Dhanmondi Road No. 32, this market is very convenient for shopping. One can get all the things they need under the same roof. It is just 10 minutes rickshaw ride away from Bproperty’s Marketplace in Dhanmondi. In this market you actually have to bargain to shop. There are several shops in this market with amazing collections of bags. There are also shops for mobile and other electrical devices on the 6th floor of the market. You can get servicing done there  as well if needed. This market also has a guitar shop. From where you will find not only guitars, but also musical instruments at different price points including Ukulele and Flute, which is unique in Dhanmondi.

This market is also known for its local boutiques, cosmetics shops, punjabi and shirt shops, children’s clothing and jewelry shops. As there are schools, colleges and universities in close proximity to this market, people from different walks of life visit this mall.

Plaza A.R, Sobhanbag 

This market is very close to the Metro Shopping Mall. It is also known as Sobhanbag Corner Market. This market is located just a walking distance away from Sobhanbag Mosque and in the middle of Metro and Rapa Plaza. As these three markets are located at a very short distance from each other, people mainly go around the markets to check and choose, and then buy.

There are a total of two food courts on the ground floor and inside the market. And since there is a private university on the opposite side of the market, many people come here after class or just to hang out. As soon as you enter this market, you will see a very open space, where you can sit and rest for a while after shopping. It also has its own car parking facility.

This market in Dhanmondi is located at Sat Masjid Road. There are about 105 shops in the market with modern facilities. And they are governed by the shop owners association of this market. Anam Rangs Plaza is right opposite to the University of Liberal Arts on Sat Masjid Road. In this 4 storey market you will find showrooms of various fashion houses, gift shops, electronics shops and food courts. The market also has its own car parking space. And like other markets in Dhanmondi, it also stays closed on Tuesdays. 

So if your home is on Rayer Bazar, Jigatola or Sat Masjid Road, you can visit this market for shopping and get anything you need. Those who like to bargain while shopping may not have much fun shopping here. Because most of the shops here have fixed prices written on them. However, there is a possibility to get different types of local and foreign products in this market.

Rapa Plaza

While listing the different markets of Dhanmondi, one must mention Rapa Plaza.  Established in 2000, this market is located at the eastern end of Road No. 27 in Dhanmondi. This market is very popular among the people of Dhanmondi and its nearby areas. This 4 storey market has two entrances. This market has a huge Time Zone showroom. There are also clothing stores, shoe stores, jewelry stores, and even tailors. Neel Anchol Sarees, Mayuri Sarees, Tanisha Sarees etc have an exclusive saree collection. Not only local products, you will also  find foreign products in this market. And you can visit the market any day except for Tuesdays.

In addition to these markets, people living in Dhanmondi usually get their weekly or monthly groceries from the Town Hall of Mohammadpur or the raw market of New Market. The Town Hall market in Mohammadpur is very popular for buying fresh food and is frequented by many Dhanmondi people.
